Introduction

Orthopaedic trauma encompasses a wide range of acute bone fractures. The most common conditions include fractures of the long bones (such as in the arms and legs) and the smaller bones (such as in the feet and hands). It also includes fractures to the joints (such as ankles, wrists and shoulders). Treatment of these injuries is dominated by fixation devices, which may be either internal or external.

The Inion product range in this area is currently focused on biodegradable internal fixation devices for the repair of traumatic fractures to the smaller bones and joints. The Company has also developed an implant for repair of the pelvis, after bone graft harvest or damage to the hip socket. In all cases, the implants are intended for use in conjunction with the appropriate external immobilisation.

Inion launched its biodegradable Orthopaedic Trauma Plating System (Inion OTPS™) in 2003. The first products launched included the Inion OTPS™ Pin, Inion OTPS™ Ankle Fixation system and Inion OTPS™ Mesh.

Inion OTPS™ Pin is designed to treat fractures, osteotomies and arthrodesis, and is coloured, allowing clear visibility during both, arthroscopic and mini-open insertion.

Inion OTPS™ Ankle Fixation system is the only complete biodegradable system offering screws for medial malleolar fractures and syndesmosis fixation as well as plating system for tibular fractures.

Inion OTPS™ Mesh can be used for various indications. It offers extra support and guiding for bone healing etc. as containment for bone grafts and fragments.

In 2004, Inion launched Inion OTPS™ Mini-Plating system. These products can be used for small fractures and osteotomies.

All Inion OTPS™ implants are based on Inion Optima™ polymer blends and have excellent handling properties, and strength and degradation characteristics that support a more natural healing process.

Inion is researching and developing more implants based on Inion OTPS™ and Inion Optima™ technology for trauma indications in the other parts of human body.
