General IntroductionInion’s sports medicine product line is devoted to treating a particular group of soft tissue injuries commonly sustained during sporting activity. These include injuries to joints, such as rupture of ligaments and cartilage damage. Inion is currently focused on repair to the cartilage and ligaments in the knee, but also has products to address similar damage in the shoulder. In 2002, Inion launched its first biodegradable product into the sports medicine market: the Inion Hexalon™ biodegradable screw for repair of anterior and posterior cruciate ligament (ACL/PCL) injuries. Hexalon™ is the first coloured biodegradable ACL/PCL screw, allowing clear visibility during arthroscopic insertion (keyhole surgery). Hexalon™ was followed in 2004 with the Inion Trinion™ meniscus screw for repairing tears of the meniscus in the knee. Inion Trinion™ is also coloured for increased visibility, and the headless design allows full insertion into the meniscus, avoiding further cartilage damage. 2005 Inion launched its Inion AnchronTM suture anchor for soft tissue to bone fixation. As two previous products Inion AnchronTM is also coloured for increased visibility. All of these products benefit from optimal design and Inion Optima™ polymer composition combined with increased visibility to overcome several disadvantages of both metal implants (such as implant removal and repairing repeat injuries) and existing biodegradable implants (brittleness).
