Surgeon collaboration in developing a new bioabsorbable orthopaedic screw – the timeline of Inion CompressOn™
29.02.2024 06:24
Inion CompressOn™ is a bioabsorbable headless screw, which was developed based on the users’ needs and customer feedback. In this article, we look back at the Inion CompressOn™ screw’s collaborative development project timeline together with our Sales Director, Tero Aaltonen.
2018
Collaborative development project kicks off
The development project of the Inion CompressOn™ screw officially started in spring 2018. Around the same time, Tero Aaltonen joined the Inion team and started presenting the first drafts of the screw to surgeons at university hospitals in Finland. The feedback was positive, highlighting a clear need for a strong, bioabsorbable headless screw.
Design, validation and verification
Our R&D team was committed to developing a bioabsorbable headless screw with enhanced features such as optimal compression properties and threaded screw head design to maintain pull-out stability.
The design verification and validation phase included biological safety evaluations, mechanical testing and clinical evaluation. The testing phase also included several tests with animal cadaver bone and SawBones in collaboration with surgeons in university hospitals to validate the performance, safety and reliability of the screw. Their hands-on involvement ensured that the screw met the requirements of healthcare professionals.
2021
CE mark and FDA clearance
Inion CompressOn™obtained its CE mark and FDA clearance in 2021. Inion CompressOn™ is a CE-marked medical device (Class III), manufactured by Inion Oy. The conformity assessment was conducted by BSI The Netherlands (CE 2797).
2022
Launch and first operation
The first operation using the Inion CompressOn™ screw took place in a Finnish University Hospital in early 2022. Tero’s connections and understanding of the orthopaedic field in Finland played a great role in the launch of the screw.
After the first operation, Tero has traveled across Finland, training customers on how to use the screw in the operating room. His aim is to be involved in every operation where the surgeon uses the Inion CompressOn™ for the first time.
2024
The screw has been used in cases such as medial malleolus osteotomy, hindfoot osteotomy, MPT I arthrodesis and OCD in the talus, to name a few. The Inion CompressOn™ has received a lot of positive feedback, and we have expanded our sales to international markets.
Inion CompressOn™ is a bioabsorbable headless cannulated screw that can be used in a wide range of indications in the areas of upper and lower extremities. The screw family contains a wide range of sizes (Ø 2.7 mm–Ø 6.0 mm, lengths 12 mm–90 mm).
Inion CompressOn™ is a CE-marked medical device (Class III), manufactured by Inion Oy. The conformity assessment was conducted by BSI The Netherlands (CE 2797).
